Wanted : Foreign experts
FOREIGN investigators might be roped in to help the Indonesian government trace the alleged fortune amassed by former President Suharto and his children.
Attorney-General Marzuki Darusman said that countries like Australia, New Zealand and Singapore, which he noted had among the world’s lowest corruption indexes, could offer their expertise.
“These are still early days, but at some stage we would need outside experts such as forensic auditors … ,” he said.
“Foreign investigators should come in at some stage also to instill public confidence that something is being done.”
He called the visit to Europe in May, by then Attorney-General Andi Ghalib and former Justice Minister Muladi, to investigate accounts the former President might have held there, “nothing but a family outing”.
